Lobelia is not demanding when planted and cared for in open ground, so it is popular for growing. The lobelia bush is neat and quite compact up to 20 cm, but there are varieties up to one and a half meters in height. The shoots of lobelia are fragile and branching begins from the very beginning of the bush. The inflorescences are on low stalks, about two centimeters in diameter. The shade of the inflorescences is deep blue, white, light blue, and pale purple. Flowering is long-lasting, starting from June until autumn. After flowering, fruits appear in the form of seed boxes that can be stored for about three years.

Lobelia is an annual and perennial, bush-like flower from the Bellflower genus. The plant got its name in honor of the botanist Matthias de Lobel. It grows almost all over the world, but in greater numbers in subtropical climates. There are about 300 varieties of lobelia in nature. Some species are used as materials for the manufacture of drugs for the treatment of lung diseases.

Some types of lobelia grow as annual plants.

Lobelia varieties and types

Or blue . Some grow this species as an annual. It is a compact bush, spherical in height up to 25 cm. The leaves are small and elongated. The inflorescences are about two centimeters in diameter, bluish in color, sometimes white, purple, it all depends on the variety. Flowering occurs from the first summer months until autumn.

This species comes in about five different forms:

  • Lobelia cascade or ampelous , its shoots can reach up to 35 cm. The bush represents a voluminous, lush cascade, which is lowered to the bottom, used for hanging flowerpots or other containers.
  • Lobelia erecta It is a bush similar to a column, reaches a height of about 25 cm.
  • Compactlobelia represents a lush, filled bush with straight shoots reaching a height of up to 15 cm.
  • Lobelia spreading , is a tall bush, shoots reach a length of up to 30 cm, the shape of the bush is decomposed. Considering that the bush itself is about 15 cm high.
  • Lobelia dwarf this species is one of the smallest, its height is only about 12 cm.

Bush lobelia ampelous , sapphire is a bush with stems directed downwards, reaching a length of up to 35 cm. The shade of the inflorescences is rich blue with whitish spots on the petals.

Perennial species and varieties are represented by the following plants:

or purple , is a bush with straight shoots reaching a height of approximately one meter. Stems are elongated at the ends with spike-shaped flowers with a rich red hue. This species loves moisture and prefers marshy areas. It is better to plant in garden plots near ponds to ensure sufficient moisture. Survives winters well.

Outwardly it resembles cardinal's lobelia. This species also presents straight tall bushes with many blue flowers. The plant loves a lot of moisture and tolerates winters well.

Represents scarlet shades, flowers are about two centimeters in diameter. The height of the bush is approximately 75 cm.

This is a rare endangered species. In nature it grows on the banks of reservoirs on sand. The shade of the inflorescences is bluish or white, the flower itself looks like a bell.

Lobelia climbing "Blue Fountain" presents numerous climbing stems that form a dense cascade of foliage and inflorescences of a blue hue with white accents. The stem length is about 35 cm.

Lobelia erecta "Riviera" , an annual, reaches a height of up to 13 cm. The bush is neat, spherical with many small inflorescences. Flowering is long lasting.

An annual plant with a spherical bush, reaching a height of up to 15 cm. The shoots are decomposed, strewn with reddish flowers with a light central base. The inflorescences are about two centimeters in diameter. Flowering is long, throughout the summer season and until frost. Flowering begins 2.5 months after sowing.

Planting and care in open ground, watering and fertilizers

Lobelia is a heat-loving plant that tolerates direct sunlight well, but at the same time takes root well in semi-shady places.

Watering for lobelia should be plentiful and constant; this plant does not tolerate drought well and stops flowering if it is not sufficiently moistened.

It is better to choose a place for planting so that the shade and sun replace each other.

To plant lobelia, you need soil that is light and loose, so that it can absorb moisture well, but not oversaturated with humus, because the plant will refuse to bloom.

After planting the plant in open ground, after a few weeks you can already apply organic fertilizer. And the next fertilizer is necessary before flowering, liquid fertilizer for flowering plants is suitable, it will help your plant bloom profusely.

Ampelous varieties need pinching, but the rest as needed if the length and shape of the plant does not suit you.

In order for lobelia to delight with abundant flowering, annual varieties, after the first flowering, must be trimmed by five centimeters. After pruning, new stems appear and flowering begins for the second round. Perennial lobelia bushes need to be rejuvenated by dividing the bush at least once every three years.

It is preferable to transplant lobelia in the spring.

Growing from seeds

The seeds of lobelia are small and therefore, in order not to plant too densely, it is better to take a match and dip it in water and then in the seeds. The amount of seeds that has stuck to the match must be transferred to a container with soil.

The soil required for planting is loose and breathable; deciduous or garden soil, sand and vermiculite are suitable. Fill the container with prepared soil and water with warm water. Then, having slightly loosened the top layer, we sow the seeds, without going deep into the ground, on the surface. Cover with film or glass and maintain the temperature at about 20 degrees.

In the right conditions, the first shoots appear after 14 days. Don't forget to ventilate the seeds so they don't rot. After the first shoots have appeared, we gradually accustom them to lighting and maintain the temperature for the seedlings at 17 degrees so that the plant hardens. It is also necessary to provide them with additional night lighting so that the seedlings do not stretch. We spray the seedlings with a sprayer, carefully so as not to nail them to the ground.

Before picking seedlings, it is necessary to moisten the soil with the seedlings and, using a spoon, separate several plants into separate containers with prepared soil. After the moment when the seedlings have taken root and grown, they can be transplanted to a permanent place of growth, but it is necessary to take into account that it is necessary to plant several plants at a time, as well as to plant them. Lobelia should be planted in open ground after the frosts have passed and the air temperature has been optimized. Seedlings are planted at a distance of about 15 cm from each other. Flowering will begin in the first summer months.

Watering the seedlings is necessary several times during daylight hours; do not allow the soil to dry out, otherwise you may lose the plant.

If lobelia seedlings do not develop, it is necessary to feed them several times with fertilizer with the addition of potassium sulfate, and in the future it is better to feed them with complex fertilizer.

Propagation by cuttings

Cuttings are taken from mature, strong last year's plants. Cuttings are cut in the spring, then you need to treat them with a growth stimulator and plant them in a light, loose soil mixture and moisten them with warm water. Cover the container with film and wait for rooting, not forgetting to ventilate periodically.

Rooting occurs on day 25, after which the plant must be gradually hardened in the open air. Fertilizer must be applied once a week, with constant, abundant watering. After flowering, pruning is necessary to the very base so that about 20 cm of stems remain, this will ensure new shoots and abundant flowering on the newly formed branches.

Diseases and pests

  • Why do lobelia leaves curl? - the reason is insufficient watering and drying out of the soil. Lobelia loves abundant and constant watering.
  • Why do lobelia leaves turn red? - the leaves begin to turn red if temperature changes occur, this does not harm the plant.
  • Lobelia leaves darken - the cause is a fungal disease, powdery mildew or fusarium. The leaves begin to become covered with dark spots or even darken and crumble. For treatment, it is necessary to remove diseased leaves and treat the plant with a solution of colloidal sulfur or other similar fungicides.
  • Why do lobelia leaves turn purple? — during adaptation, after planting in open ground and temperature changes at night, the leaves change color; it is better to plant in the ground when the temperature regime has already recovered.
  • Lobelia sticky leaves - the reason is damage by scale insects or mealy worms; a solution of laundry soap is suitable for treating and saving the plant.
  • Why doesn't lobelia bloom? - for abundant flowering, it is necessary to prune the shoots to form new shoots after they appear and the second wave of flowering begins.

Also, it is necessary to provide the lobelia with constant and abundant moisture when planting and caring for it in open ground, then the plant will always delight you with lush flowering.
