Master class on building a decorative well from tires. How to build a septic tank from tires with your own hands: step-by-step instructions How to make a well from car tires

Many of us are accustomed to a comfortable city life with all the amenities. Therefore, when you come to the dacha, even for a couple of days, you also want to take a shower and wash your hands. A sewerage system is needed, but everyone understands perfectly well that its arrangement is an expensive pleasure. In our article we will talk about an alternative and not expensive method - tire sewerage.

Where to start arranging a sewer system?

When arranging the system, the primary task is to draw up a plan and prepare the necessary materials and tools.

Before digging a sewer and starting to build a drainage well, it is recommended to check the soil.

To do this, 0.5 meters from the foundation of the house you need to dig a small hole 1.5 meters deep and examine the occurrence of groundwater. If everything is in order, then you can safely begin constructing a drainage well.

If you notice that the soil does not absorb water well, then it is better to provide a pit into which the water drained from the house will be collected. In order to ensure proper outflow of water from the house and drain it into the sewer, it is necessary to make a sealed drain with a slight slope towards the pit.

Then, from the very bottom of the pit at a level of 10-12 cm, an outlet drain pipe is installed.

DIY tire well

When constructing a well from tractor or car tires, it is important to remember that the task of any septic tank is to receive wastewater as quickly as possible. And only then gradually distribute the wastewater into the ground, where it is disposed of naturally and does not cause any harm to the environment.

Getting car tires will not be difficult; quite the opposite: they will be happy to give them to any auto repair shop, so as not to pay money for subsequent disposal.

Tires from cars, trucks and special equipment are suitable for installation. That is, there is no need to look for a specific size - any tire will do. The only condition: all tires must be approximately the same size and thickness.

Let's look at the antiseptic device in the figure. If you look closely, sewage from car tires is nothing more than a barrel, the constituent elements of which are car tires.

It must be remembered that the septic tank must be located at a distance of 25-30 meters from the drainage and inspection wells, as well as water intake wells and no closer than 5 meters from the buried foundation.

Some secrets of arranging sewerage from tires

Many people think about how to dig a sewer so that the sewer system functions without complications?

There is no need to be afraid. You just need to listen to the advice of experts and do everything step by step, slowly.

To install a sewer system, you need to dig a narrow hole 1.5-2 meters deep with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the tire.

To make this task easier, it is advisable to prepare an entrenching tool, namely: two shovels with long handles.

So:

  1. The first bayonet shovel should have a handle of 2.5 meters or even more, with a cross-shaped handle. The role of this shovel is to loosen the soil.
  2. The second shovel will serve as a scoop; for this, an ordinary shovel with a large bend angle on a long handle will do. A little advice: in order for the shovel to perform its function more effectively, you need to equip its edges with small sides. Then the earth will crumble less.

We place the first car tire on the ground and outline the outline of our septic tank. Moreover, we determine the contour to be 5-8 cm larger than the diameter of the tire itself. First, we use a regular bayonet shovel and remove the soil from under the tire until it is convenient to do so with such a shovel.

When a regular shovel handle is not enough, we take a prepared shovel with an elongated handle, loosen the soil with it, and remove it with a shovel handle. We use a tire to check whether the size of our hole is suitable or not.

After we have dug the required depth of the hole, we drill a drainage hole in its center. An ordinary garden auger will do an excellent job for this purpose. Thus, you will make holes in all the waterproof layers in the soil. And this is necessary in order to speed up the drainage of your septic tank.

The depth of the pit for sewage from car tires must be at least 2 meters (usually 5-7 tires are used), at the same time, the well itself must be deep enough - at least 5 meters.

Our well is ready, now we lower the drainage pipe into it. For this purpose, currently the easiest way is to take two polypropylene sewer pipes (the total length of which must be at least 4 meters) and place them at a level of 1 meter above the bottom of the pit.

This will help prevent the pipe from clogging. Thus, water entering the pipe through the side holes falls sharply to a depth of 4 meters and there drains into the ground sand.

A quick tip: Cover the end of the drain pipe with fine polypropylene mesh, this will prevent it from clogging if the drain overflows.

The bottom of the sewer pit must be filled with large crushed stone at least 10 cm thick and the prepared tires must be laid on top of each other. You will need an electric jigsaw to trim the inner rim on one side of the tire so that water does not become trapped in the tire recess.

Attention: in order to cut a hole in the tire for the gutter, first they also use a jigsaw, and then finish it with a hacksaw - the metal cord in the tire is very difficult to saw.

After all the tires are laid, we fill in the gaps around them and the holes, and cover our arranged one. To do this, it is better to prepare a special lid made of plastic or other resistant material. We give it an aesthetic appearance - we fill it with a mound, it can be turned into a flower garden.

Important: leave a hole in the septic tank lid to control its filling level. In order to avoid extraneous drainage of groundwater, you can put a polyethylene film between the soil and the tires or install a ring of roofing felt. And for natural drainage, you can plant several trees near your septic tank.

A well-maintained house is, first of all, housing with sewerage. Unfortunately, not everywhere there are conditions for arranging communications. Often you have to resort to unusual methods of creating it, for example, setting up a septic tank from tires, a simple and practical option that allows you to provide your home with a sewer system without much expense. However, you need to understand that such a structure is not intended for large volumes of wastewater, so it is chosen if the sewerage system will be used by a small number of people.

Septic tank: difference from a cesspool and principle of operation

Many people mentally equate a cesspool with a septic tank, confident that since they have to be pumped out, there is no difference. However, it is not. The difference is colossal. A cesspool is a regular tank that is emptied as it fills. Whereas a septic tank made from tires is a system that carries out biological treatment of wastewater. It also requires pumping from time to time, but much less often than a cesspool.

The system consists of two sealed tanks connected to each other. The first container receives wastewater directly from the sewer pipe. This area can be considered a primary purification zone in which large particles of contaminants settle. This is where the bacteria that clean the drains begin their work.

Sewage settles to the bottom, only the initially purified water reaches the overflow zone, which is located in the upper part, and enters the second chamber. It is slightly larger than the first one. Here, the active work of bacteria continues, only it occurs much more intensely.

Basic rules for arranging a structure

When choosing a location for a septic tank, you need to consider the following:

  • There must be at least a meter of soil between the upper groundwater level and the bottom of the structure.
  • The distance from the drinking water intake to the septic tank is at least 50 m for sandy soils and 20 meters for clay soils.
  • There must be free access for the sewage disposal truck.
  • The distance from the house to the septic tank is at least 5 m.
  • If possible, the structure is arranged so that its level is below the water intake, that is, in the direction of the natural slope of the landscape.

A sewer pipe must be connected to the septic tank. To prevent damage in the cold, it is best to lay it below the freezing level of the soil. You can arrange a special protective box in which it will be reliably protected from mechanical damage and will be able to “play” from temperature differences without consequences.

System installation features

Having chosen a place for a structure, you need to decide on its volume. It is usually considered that it should be equal to at least three times the daily flow. Based on this, the approximate depth of the structure is calculated. Most often it is equal to the height of 5-7 tires.

Considering that tires can be very different, both from passenger cars and from powerful agricultural equipment, the volume of the structure also varies.

When laying tires in a pit, they can be fastened to each other, then the structure will be stronger

The work is being carried out in stages:

  • Marking. The tire intended for the first well is taken and laid on the ground. The dimensions of the future well are marked on it. At a certain distance, a tire intended for the second container is placed. It can be larger in diameter, since the volume of the second well must be larger. Markings are also carried out on it. Then a hole of the required size is dug for both containers.
  • Arrangement of the bottom of wells. It should not allow sewage into the ground. The surface can be concreted or a so-called “clay plug” 20-25 cm wide can be arranged.
  • Tire preparation. The top part of each tire is carefully removed using a jigsaw. After installation, such parts form a well with smoother walls, which will prevent sewage from lingering on them.
  • Tire installation. The tires are stacked one on top of the other. At the same time, for the strength of the connection, they can be pierced in pairs and tied with wire. Each joint and seam is carefully coated with sealant. Between the wells, at a height of approximately 2/3 from the bottom, a transition pipe should be inserted, under which a hole should be cut. In the upper part of the first well, a hole is also cut out for a sewer pipe extended from the house.
  • Laying pipes between wells. An ordinary plastic sewer pipe is suitable for these purposes. A structure that supplies drains from the house is also inserted and secured inside the hole.
  • Filling the hole. For these purposes, you can use sand or soil that was removed when digging a hole. The operation is performed carefully so as not to damage the integrity of the structure.
  • Arrangement of the lid. Wells must be covered with lids; it is desirable that the material from which they are made does not rot.

The structure is ready for use.

The overflow pipe between the containers is mounted in a hole cut into the tires

The main advantage of this option is its low cost and ease of installation. There are, however, disadvantages:

  • The small amount of wastewater it can process.
  • There is a fairly high risk of soil contamination with sewage, since it is difficult to achieve complete sealing from tires.

Also, when planning to build such a septic tank from tires with your own hands, you need to understand that the structure belongs to the class of septic tanks and therefore requires pumping out the accumulated liquid.

Some owners of country houses are making attempts to equip a full-fledged three-chamber septic tank from tires. However, it is worth noting that although technically this is quite possible, tires are not the best material for such structures. It is unlikely that it will be possible to ensure the tightness necessary for the effective operation of the septic tank. In addition, tires connected to each other can gradually shift as a result of seasonal temperature fluctuations in the soil, which further compromises the tightness of each chamber. As a septic tank, the tire structure serves very well, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of civilization even far from the city.

Equipping your home with all the benefits of civilization is the main task of a good owner. Fortunately, now there is every opportunity to supply electricity to a residential building and organize a water supply. But centralized sewerage is not available everywhere. If you have enough funds, you can purchase a ready-made factory septic tank or build it, for example, from concrete rings. In cases where finances are not going very well, folk craftsmen come to the rescue and come up with the idea of making a septic tank from tires with their own hands. This is a very good idea, but only suitable for a house with a small number of residents.

To people who are not particularly knowledgeable, it may seem that a cesspool and a septic tank are different names for the same sewerage structure. This is fundamentally wrong. A septic tank, unlike a cesspool, is a more modern and modernized type of sewage system.

It consists of two interconnected reservoirs. Wastewater flows through the sewer pipe into the first - storage. Primary cleaning occurs in it: large particles settle to the bottom and cleansing bacteria begin to process them. The second tank, which is usually slightly smaller than the first, receives partially purified wastewater, where the bacteria continue to work. Approximately 95% of the total volume entering the septic tank is ultimately discharged as clean water.

If you compare all the characteristics of a cesspool and a septic tank, the indisputable advantage of a septic sewer system will become clear and obvious. It shows much greater efficiency.

Advantages of a septic tank made from car tires

  • Availability and abundance of material. You can save up old tires yourself or ask for them at the nearest tire shop. They will be willingly given away, because service station employees will have fewer problems with tire disposal.
  • Remarkable performance. If you calculate everything correctly and take a responsible approach to the construction of a homemade septic tank from tires, then you can achieve even greater efficiency than some factory-made ones.
  • Low cost. The construction of a sewer well from tires can be completely free of charge if you assemble the tires yourself and do not involve hired workers in the excavation work.
  • Easy to install. To install many factory-made septic tanks, you have to use more than one extra pair of hands, and do-it-yourself sewerage from tires is so easy to install that you can do everything without anyone’s help.

Disadvantages of a septic tank made from tires

  • This sewerage structure is not suitable for use in houses inhabited by more than 3 people.
  • In winter, using a tire septic tank is difficult, because despite careful insulation, the tire material still freezes and the contents of such a well are not processed by bacteria.
  • Whatever size tires are installed, their contents will have to be pumped out at least once a quarter.
  • Twice a year it is necessary to inspect the connections between tires in order to identify leaks in time and seal the joints.
  • The service life of such a country septic tank made from tires, even with careful care and careful operation, is no more than 15 years.
  • If you do not install a vent pipe, an unpleasant odor may occasionally appear from under the septic tank lid.
  • It is not recommended to overhaul a septic tank made from old car tires with your own hands, therefore, if the tire material is corroded, it is necessary to redo everything again.

If all the pros and cons are weighed and a decision is made in favor of building a sewer system from tires, you can get to work.

You can learn about storm drainage from. What are its functions and what types does it come in?

We also have material on how to make it.

Location requirements

  • It is better to place the sewage system in a private house made of tires on the leeward side of the house. This simple trick will allow you to protect yourself from “enjoying” unpleasant odors coming from under the sewer cover.
  • In order not to worry about overcrowding of the drain, it is better to initially install tires with the largest possible diameter and in the amount of 5-7 pieces. In this case, even if three people live permanently in the house, the volume of the septic tank will be sufficient.
  • While digging holes for each of the tanks, it is necessary to periodically check the diameter with one tire so as not to gradually narrow.
  • When excavating, it is most convenient to use two different shovels with long handles. The bayonet type is designed for loosening the earth, and the scoop type is for removing loosened soil from the hole.
  • A tire septic tank can be connected not only to sewer lines from the house, but also from an outdoor washbasin or outdoor shower.
  • The inner rim of tires must be cut off so that unprocessed dirt and debris do not accumulate in the curves.
  • It is best to use plastic “clamps” to secure tires. They are not prone to moisture damage and are fairly easy to attach.
  • The ventilation pipe should rise slightly above the septic tank lid (at least 60 cm). The closer the tanks are to residential buildings, the higher the pipe should be.
  • For convenience, you can make an inspection window in the lid of the septic tank and cover it with a piece of thick rubber. This will make it much easier to control how full the containers are.
  • To insulate a septic tank, before filling with sand or crushed stone, tires can be wrapped in roofing felt or thick polyethylene. The same technique is used if there is even the slightest risk of untreated wastewater getting into groundwater.
  • Experienced owners recommend planting some kind of moisture-loving tree near the tanks: weeping willow, alder or broom. The plant will absorb all excess water.

Summer residents often face the problem of turning off water. The situation is not pleasant, but there is a way out for land owners - a do-it-yourself well made from tires. With it, nothing will overshadow your stay outside the city and watering will be easy.

Everyone dreams of having a source of life-giving moisture on their property.

Creating a well from tires with your own hands is not too troublesome. Also, “construction” will not take much time, but it will require effort. The construction of the source is divided into two stages - the construction of the shaft and the bottom. And, of course, you need to take care of a canopy that will prevent contaminants from getting into the well from tires, worsening the quality of water.

Before you start building a tire well with your own hands, you need to find a place where the water is at the same level (over an area of several square meters).

Its quantity and quality are important. Digging is allowed at a distance of at least 50 meters (sanitary zone) from sources of soil contamination, i.e. heaps of manure, which are necessarily present on the plots, toilets, places for walking animals, since household waste will definitely get into the source, which will make the water not only smelly and tasteless, but also dangerous. A well made from tires with your own hands is located at a distance of at least 5 meters from the house.

It is important to analyze the quality of the water found. If there are buildings on the site, there should also be geological exploration results on the depth of the water layer. If they are missing, you need to spend money on them, since only this procedure will provide accurate data.

What time of year is most suitable for construction?

It is better to start construction in the fall, when groundwater reaches its maximum depth. If you start it in the spring, when there is a lot of high water, it is easy to get to the water, the level of which may fall during the dry period. This means that the spring will often dry up in the summer.

The depth of the pit directly depends on the function that the well will perform. If it is being built to store water in case of an unusual situation, it is enough to dig a hole of 2.5-3 meters. To build a full-fledged well, which is filled with groundwater, you will have to dig 9 meters deep. In the latter case, it is important to carry out the work with special care so that the walls do not collapse.

Materials and tools for the source device

Having decided on a place, stock up on:

  • the right number of tires;
  • crushed stone;
  • bars;
  • board;
  • bitumen varnish;
  • antiseptic glue;
  • nails.

Tools you can't do without:

  • sharp knife;
  • hammer;
  • shovels.

Typically, for a meter-deep well, 4-5 tires of any size are enough. Based on this, it is easy to calculate how many of them are needed to make a well of tires of any depth.

Step-by-step instructions for building a spring from tires

  • Tires should have an increased inner diameter. To do this, cut out a ring 5 centimeters from the tread using a knife, the blade of which is recommended to be lubricated with oil or soap so that it slides easier. You can also use a hacksaw for this operation. A grinder is also used, but it is not suitable for an inexperienced master. You can cut through the metal fibers (or composites) that reinforce the tires from the inside using wire cutters.

  • Next, the tires are washed with a brush and treated with bitumen varnish. This helps to increase their service life and prevent harmful substances from entering the water;
  • The next step is preparing the hole. Its diameter should be 20 centimeters longer than the diameter of the tires. Crushed stone is poured onto the bottom, the layer of which is 40 centimeters wide. The first tire is lowered onto it, on the sides of which bars are driven in on four sides so that the subsequent tires do not move. It is recommended to place scraps of rubber 2 cm thick between them;
  • Having laid all the tires on top of each other, fill the space between them and the soil with crushed stone or expanded clay. Sometimes there are recommendations for installing concrete rings at the bottom of the well, which will make cleaning more convenient and easier in the future;
  • To give the structure strength, the tires are glued together with rubber glue, since its main characteristic is moisture resistance.
  • The source must rise above the surface of the earth by at least 70 centimeters. There is no need for rubber spacers between raised tires;
  • There must be a waterproof coating around such a structure. The most economical and simple option is to use crushed stone. It must be compacted thoroughly and then filled with water. You can use a blind area made of cement or clay, but it will be more difficult to complete.

After this, they build a canopy or make a cover, for which a board is suitable. Depending on personal preferences, to make it easier to lift a container filled with water, an automatic pumping system is installed or another device is made.

Advantages of sourcing from tires

DIY tire products have a lot of them:

  • it is economical;
  • the water does not bloom in it;
  • mold and mucus do not form on the walls;
  • in comparison with other wells, it has a higher column of water;
  • There is no rubber smell due to the use of crushed stone.

Its only drawback is that the depth cannot be more than 9 meters due to the unreinforced walls of the pit.

Where to buy tires

There is no question of purchasing old tires: they will simply be gladly given to you at any auto repair shop. Tractor tires or from heavy-duty vehicles (KAMAZ, ZIL) are ideal for future design. The main condition is that they match in size.

Video: How to make a well from tires with your own hands

You can make many unusual accessories from car tires, for example, a decorative well in your country house. A non-standard approach to using used materials allows you not only to spend your finances more economically, but also to decorate your site with unusual accessories.

Making a decorative well

Necessary materials

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • 3 tires;
  • 2 logs with a diameter of 10–15 cm and 2 pieces of timber 1 meter each;
  • 4 beams 1.5 meters long for constructing a roof support;
  • 6–8 roof boards;
  • Fastening materials: screws, nails, metal corners;
  • Acrylic paint;
  • Pots for flowers.

You can make a decorative well from the above materials in literally 2–3 hours.

Construction of the simplest well

Cut holes in each of the 3 tires for the support posts on which the roof will rest. Try to make the sipes at the same level on all three tires. Place the first tire on the ground and make marks on the soil. In the marked place you need to drill a small hole for the support posts. For additional fixation of tires, the base for the pegs can be concreted.

Note that support posts can also be installed outside the tires. With this approach to constructing a well with your own hands, you will save a lot of time, since you will get rid of the need to cut holes in the middle of the tires for wooden blocks.

Step two - making the roof. In order for a decorative well to have an attractive appearance, you need to take measurements of the stakes driven into the ground. We cut off the irregularities with a hacksaw. It is better to make a cover for a homemade tire well from a special roofing material (can be used).

Instructions for constructing a roof:

  • Construction of roof supports. Between the wooden beams you can build with your own hands something similar to gratings or crossbars;
  • We make the flooring from slate or boards. This is the most suitable option for a tire well. Metal tiles, ceramic tiles, bituminous shingles or roofing felt are also considered good roofing materials for the roof. Note that the shape of the roof can be gable or single-pitch - it all depends on your preferences and ability to make complex structures with your own hands.

Painting

The issue of choosing a material for painting and reviewing technology must be taken seriously. If you choose the wrong paint or apply it incorrectly, the painted surface will soon begin to flake, peel and fall off.

Which paint to choose? Oil-based dyes are not suitable for painting rubber tires. We strongly do not recommend using oil paints for hot regions if you do not want your decorative well to turn into a battered element of the overall decoration in six months.

To paint tires, we advise you to choose enamel, bitumen and acrylic paint. An even better option is rubber paint, which stands out for its ability to stretch and contract, allowing it to balance between sudden temperature changes.

Before painting the tires, make sure that there are no greasy stains left on the surface of the rubber, otherwise the paint will not adhere well and will fall off over time. Painting instructions:

  • Wash the decorative well with kitchen detergents. Dry the washed surface in the sun;
  • Degrease the rubber with acetone, gasoline or alcohol;
  • Painting rubber. To paint tires, you can use an ordinary brush or paint in cans;
  • Dry the decorative well for several days;
  • Apply the remaining patterns with a thin brush.

Review of creative ideas

What other shapes and sizes can a decorative well have? In fact, you can build a real work of art from car tires. Let's look at some unusual ideas:

Alcove. You can even make a gazebo out of car tires; you just need to build 4 wells in the corners, covering them with any roofing material. Nail slats between the columns, creating a simple geometric shape from them.
